Is your kitchen a candidate?
- Solid wood, MDF, and quality plywood cabinet boxes refinish beautifully.
- Thermofoil and laminate cabinets are not good candidates — the coating will not bond reliably.
- If your boxes are sound but the doors are dated, replacement doors plus a refinish is often a smart middle path.
Spray vs brush
- A sprayed finish lays down glass-smooth with no brush marks — this is the factory look most homeowners want.
- Brushed and rolled finishes show stipple and brush lines up close. Acceptable on utility cabinets, not on a feature kitchen.
- Quality painters spray doors and drawer fronts in a controlled space and either spray or hand-finish the boxes in place.
Coatings
- Conversion varnish (CV): the hardest, most durable finish. Solvent-based, requires shop spray and proper ventilation.
- Waterborne urethane / urethane-acrylic hybrids: nearly as hard as CV, low odor, dries fast — the current homeowner-friendly standard.
- Standard latex enamel: easiest to apply but softest finish. Fine for low-traffic cabinets, not ideal for a main kitchen.
On-site vs shop spray
- Shop spray: doors and drawers are removed, transported, and sprayed in a dust-controlled booth. Best finish, longer downtime.
- On-site spray: everything is sprayed in your kitchen with extensive masking. Faster, slightly more risk of dust nibs.
- Hybrid: boxes painted on-site (sprayed or hand-finished), doors and drawers sprayed in shop. This is what most premium painters offer.

- Add $800 to $1,500 if you want hinges and pulls upgraded at the same time.
