How to Prepare for a Painting Estimate
Before a painter walks your home, do these five things so you get an accurate, comparable estimate.
Five things to do before the walk-through
- Write down every room or elevation you want painted, plus anything you are unsure about.
- Decide which surfaces are in scope: walls only, walls and ceilings, trim, doors, closets.
- Pull furniture a few feet off the walls so the painter can see baseboards and corners.
- Note any repairs — nail pops, drywall cracks, water stains, peeling caulk.
- Have a budget range and timeline in mind before they arrive.
Questions to ask during the walk-through
- What prep is included — patching, sanding, caulking, priming?
- How many coats, and what product line will you use?
- Who is on the crew and will the owner be on site?
- What is the workmanship warranty and what voids it?
- When could you start and how many days will it take?
